The JSE is a paid-up member of the Association of National Numbering Agents (ANNA), i.e. an authorised National Numbering Agent (NNA) - an entity authorised to issue ISINs in accordance with ISO and ANNA rules and guidelines.
The Money Market Forum (MMF) and STRATE approached the JSE with their key requirements - to enable dematerialisation, trading and electronic clearing and settlement of money market instruments on the same day that requires the issuing of an ISIN code. The requirement was to provide an electronic method to enable the MMF participants via STRATE to create, amend and delete ISIN codes for money market instruments. Based on this requirement the JSE developed and has implemented a Money Market Instrument (MMI) ISIN system.
Subsequent, to the above, the JSE was also approached to issue ISINs for Unlisted Securities. The JSE has also developed and implemented an Unlisted ISINs system. This is restricted to Proprietary Limited and Limited companies and only includes shares in such company’s. It does not include debt instruments, trusts, etc. This will be investigated under a separate phase.
