‚ÄčLevel field leaves no room for 'flashboys'

NOT long after dawn, close to 300 people throng the first floor of the Standard Bank building in Rosebank, Johannesburg, a cosmic flicker away from JSE headquarters in Sandton.

The dealing desk feels lucky. Just two months ago it squatted in rented rooms while fat fibre-optic pipes fed its orders straight into the bowels of South Africa's only securities exchange. It had to be next to the JSE, because every other dealer in town was; it had to be quick.
