Who we are
At the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) we are driven for your and South Africa’s growth. Formed in 1887, we have operated as a marketplace for trading financial products for over 130 years and are currently the largest stock exchange in Africa. We are fully electronic and efficient, offering secure markets with world-class regulation, trading and clearing systems, settlement assurance as well as risk management.
As part of our commitment to a better future, we were the first emerging market and stock exchange globally to introduce an exchange-sponsored sustainability index, measuring companies on indicators related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. Our listing requirements around the King Code on corporate governance has also been influential globally and following King III, we are the first stock exchange to incorporate the move towards integrated reporting.
We currently act as the frontline regulator, setting listings requirements and enforcing trading rules, whilst reporting to the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) as the lead regulator.
What we offer
We offer three boards on which companies can gain exposure and raise capital. The equity market has two boards, namely the Main board and AltX, with the third being the Debt/Interest Rate market. The Debt/Interest Rate market differs from the equity boards in that investors buy the debt of the issuer and not the shareholding.
Our derivatives market consists of equities, commodities, bonds, interest rate and currencies. Being one of the few multi-asset class marketplaces, it allows us to attract international investors who trade JSE-listed shares without any restrictions. We also offer both local and foreign company listings and give you access to more than 800 listed securities and approximately 400 listed companies, together with 60 Equity market member firms. In addition, we have comprehensive trading, statistical index and non-index data nearing 200 indices.
