The FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series was a result of an exciting joint venture between the JSE Limited (JSE) and the FTSE Group (FTSE), a world-leader in the creation and management of indices. The Series brought with it a change in the philosophy and methodology for calculating indices and classifying sectors. The FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series replaced the JSE Actuaries indices on the 24th of June 2002.

Click here for details on the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB), the classification system that replaced the FTSE Global Classification system in January 2005. Furthermore, the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB), the joint classification system launched by FTSE Group and Dow Jones Indexes, enhanced its four-tier industry classification system from 1st March 2008. These new changes will not be applied to any FTSE indices, but only to the ICB Universe product and the enhancements to ICB will not be implemented in FTSE indices until 2009. Therefore changes to the FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series will only be implemented in 2009.
