As the financial services industry intensifies efforts to grow the number of individual investors further, so has the need to bolster financial and investor education, says the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) ahead of global World Investor Week (WIW) from 3 to 9 October 2022.

"With extensive and complex investment information out there, a lot has to be done to significantly improve investors' understanding of the investment universe," says Vuyo Lee, JSE’s Director for Marketing and Corporate Affairs.

The JSE will have a special market open on Thursday, 6 October as it joins other stock exchanges in a global drive to raise awareness about financial literacy and the importance of investor education. To mark the occasion, the JSE will announce the winners of the 2022 Virtual Trading Game (VTG).

The VTG is an online platform that simulates a real trading environment and gives participants a risk-free opportunity to practice trading shares. The game is open to all South Africans who want to learn about the stock market and investing. Over 5000 people participated in the 2022 edition of the VTG and the game continues to draw the attention of South Africans who are keen to learn about the stock market and investing.

The JSE has several other financial literacy initiatives it offers, including the JSE Investment Challenge for high schools and tertiary institutions, #JSESheInvests, JSE Power Hours, SA Stock Picks, powered by JSE, and learning modules that are freely available on the JSE website.

“Financial education is important because of the positive correlation between the quality of investment decisions as well as the level of knowledge investors have about financial markets and the potential societal impact. As the JSE, in collaboration with other financial institutions locally and globally, we recognise the important role we must play in this regard,” Lee concludes.

Join us as we Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy and celebrate with the 2022 Virtual Trading Game winners.
