Geoff Rothschild ends an era as he opens the market at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange

Johannesburg, 23 March 2015: An association of more than 50 years will end at the end of March when Geoff Rothschild retires from the JSE.  His journey with the JSE began in the mid 60’s with Rothschild auditing a stockbroker who he subsequently worked with for more than 30 years.   In 1986 he joined the Finance and IT subcommittee of the JSE.   In 1991 he was elected to the JSE Committee and served on the JSE Board until 2008.  During this period he was Deputy Chairman and then Chairman (2000/2001).   Rothschild has worked full time for the JSE from 2003 and his last role has been Head of Government and International Affairs.

Market openings at the JSE are often reserved for newly listed companies issuing their stock for public trade and in celebration of a new chapter in a company’s life.  However, in acknowledgement of his many years of service to the JSE in various roles, Rothschild opened the market today.

CEO of the JSE, Nicky Newton-King, said, “Geoff Rothschild’s opening of the market is fitting as he has been instrumental in the development of the JSE as leading bourse and gateway to capital markets.  Geoff has been integral to positioning the JSE as a world-class, well-regulated and trusted exchange across Africa.”

Rothschild has served as Deputy President of the African Stock Exchange Association (ASEA), Chairman of the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE), and a Council Member of the National Advisory Council for Innovation (NACI).

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Da Vinci Institute of Technology, Trustee of Brand South Africa, Director of Nepad Business Foundation and Grootbos Foundation, and Adviser to Brand Africa and Patron of Education Africa and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

Rothschild is a qualified chartered accountant and chartered marketer.
