22 March 2023, Johannesburg The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Virtual Trading Game (VTG), now in its third year, has officially kicked off giving thousands of aspiring investors the opportunity to test and develop their trading skills.

The VTG is one of the bourse’s financial literacy programmes that aims to educate South Africans about investing on the JSE and the larger role that such investment plays in the country's economy. The game simulates a real trading environment, giving participants a risk-free opportunity to trade shares. Players are allocated a virtual sum of R1 million to invest and the competitor that achieves the highest portfolio return at the end of the competition wins R60 000 in the form of investment vouchers.

Through the VTG, South Africans are able to gain real-life investing and trading skills, and can learn about the fundamentals of trading as well as strategise around trading JSE-listed instruments.

Idris Seedat, Head: Transformation and CSI, says: “The JSE is dedicated to driving economic inclusion and financial literacy in South Africa, hence we launched the VTG in 2021. Over the past three years, the game attracted a significant amount of aspiring investors to explore the daily dynamics of online share trading. By adding a gamification component to the competition, we hope to appeal to and resonate with South Africans. We hope that the game will lead to a realisation of the opportunities that are available on the stock market for people to create wealth for themselves and their loved ones.”

After attracting over 5 000 participants last year, the JSE looks forward to reaching more people and expanding its footprint for this year’s edition in order to change more lives.

The VTG is open to anyone who is a South African citizen or a resident of South Africa but excludes high school learners and higher education students, as there is the JSE Investment Challenge for them. Professional traders or those working for a stockbroking firm, asset management, or wealth management institution are also excluded.
