On Thursday, 22 February, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) will host a market close ceremony in association with the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa (JGISA) to honour the legacy of UN Messenger of Peace and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, Dr Jane Goodall, DBE. This event forms part of Dr Goodall’s worldwide celebrations marking her upcoming 90th birthday and her remarkable contributions to shaping the global sustainability movement.

The JSE recognises the significance of Dr Goodall’s work and is honoured to work with the JGISA in commemorating this occasion. The market close ceremony will not only serve as a platform to celebrate Dr Goodall's tireless dedication to environmental advocacy and her extraordinary impact on global conservation efforts but will also be a vehicle to unpack how sustainable financing can address some of the world’s biggest issues.

Loshni Naidoo, Chief Sustainability Officer at the JSE, expressed the exchange's pride in hosting this event, stating, "Dr Jane Goodall's groundbreaking work and lifelong commitment to conservation serves as an inspiration to us all. We are honoured to play a role in celebrating her remarkable achievements and spreading her message of hope through action”.

Dr Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees, initiated at the age of 26 in Gombe, Tanzania, revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Through her tireless efforts and the establishment of the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977, she has inspired millions globally to champion conservation and foster sustainable practices.

The JSE has long championed sustainability and is proud to have been pioneers in this field. The bourse’s sustainability segment, which houses a range of debt instruments aimed at various ESG objectives, boasts more than 70 sustainability bonds listed and a total issued amount in excess of R40-billion. In 2022, the exchange launched its Sustainability and Climate Disclosure Guidance to promote transparency and good governance and guide listed companies on best practice in environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure.

Evelyn Deiner, Chairperson of the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, highlighted the importance of partnerships in advancing their mission, stating, "We are delighted to collaborate with the JSE in honouring Dr Jane Goodall's legacy. Together, we can amplify her message and inspire collective action towards a more sustainable future."

Dr Goodall continues to be a beacon of hope, advocating for community-led conservation initiatives through JGI's "Tacare" approach, empowering young leaders through the "Roots & Shoots" programme, and spearheading the "Jane's Green Hope" campaign to combat climate change and protect biodiversity.
