Johannesburg, 31 March 2021: The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) announced the winners of the 2020 SPIRE Awards during a virtual gala event that was held last night. The 2020 awards are particularly significant as they honour the resilience and hard work of our Capital Markets during the most volatile and uncertain time of our era.

The annual SPIRE Awards have been celebrating the contribution of market participants for 19 years and are recognised as the benchmark for South African markets, as voted for by institutional investors.

Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) dominated the honours, scooping 10 of the 39 awards including the Best Fixed Income & Forex House, Best Market Making Team: Listed Interest Rate Derivatives, and Best Sales Team: Interest Rate Derivatives.

ABSA Corporate and Investment Banking followed closely with nine awards for being top in categories such as Best Bond House, Best Forex House, and Best Research House. Standard Bank came third, winning five awards.

“These awards are especially noteworthy because they were won at a time when the normal industry challenges were compounded by the unprecedented economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These highly regarded awards are a fitting acknowledgement of hard work, diligence and superb expertise of our Capital Markets,” says Bernard Claassens, Manager: Fixed Income at the JSE.

Last night’s virtual ceremony was attended by the broad financial eco-system including traders, analysts and executives of financial organisations.

“We congratulate all the 2020 winners,” Claassens concludes.
